How did I receive £15,000 as a social entrepreneur?

Winsome Duncan has been generously presented with a £15,000 award by the Islington based charity UnLtd. The prestigious Build It – Star People award is given to a small handful of entrepreneurs each year. This award is for her exceptional employability work in her community, which helps the unemployed back into work or start up their own business.

The Award-winning author tells her emotive story of being dyslexic and how she struggled when faced with unemployment for the third time in her career. Winsome battled depression as she sank deeper into debt, and was forced to learn how to save money on a tight budget. 100 Ways To Save Money – An Employment Guide aims to inspire ordinary people to save money on a daily basis, secure a job, or start up their own business with the powerful tools included in the BONUS ‘Crunch It’ workbook. Winsome went from living on £49.00 job seeker allowance to owning her own business by enrolling on the Job Centre ‘New Enterprise Allowance’ programme. She now works full time in her business and employs a team of six staff and volunteers within the past 18 months.

The Star People programme is run by UnLtd, the UK’s leading provider of support to ‘social entrepreneurs’ – people with energy and passion to make their world a better place.
With funding and support from UnLtd, working with Local Trust, the Star People Programme has been making awards ranging from £500 for people to try out their ideas to £5,000 for those with the confidence to take their ideas forward.
